Do's & Don'ts

Do's

  • Regularly inspect and pump your septic tank: Have a qualified professional inspect and pump your tank every 3-5 years, or more frequently based on household size and water usage.
  • Conserve water: Reduce water usage by installing water-efficient fixtures, fixing leaks promptly, and staggering laundry and dishwashing loads throughout the week to avoid overwhelming the system.
  • Dispose of waste properly: Only flush human waste and toilet paper down the toilet. Dispose of all other waste, such as diapers, feminine hygiene products, wipes, coffee grounds, and cat litter, in the trash.
  • Maintain the drainfield: Keep heavy objects and vehicles off the drainfield to prevent soil compaction and pipe damage. Avoid planting trees and shrubs with deep roots near the drainfield.
  • Use septic-safe cleaning products: Choose cleaning products and detergents labeled as “septic-safe” or “biodegradable” to avoid harming the beneficial bacteria in your septic tank.

Don'ts

  • Flush anything other than human waste and toilet paper: Avoid flushing wipes (even “flushable” ones), paper towels, feminine hygiene products, diapers, dental floss, coffee grounds, and other non-biodegradable items that can clog the system.
  • Pour grease, fats, and oils down the drain: These substances can solidify and clog pipes and the drainfield. Dispose of them in the trash after they cool and solidify.
  • Use harsh chemicals excessively: Large amounts of bleach, chemical drain cleaners, and other harsh cleaners can kill the beneficial bacteria in your septic tank, hindering its ability to break down waste.
  • Drive or park on the drainfield: The weight can compact the soil and damage the drain lines.
  • Plant trees or shrubs too close to the septic system: Tree roots can invade and damage the tank and drain field.

By following these do's and don'ts, you can ensure your septic system functions effectively, avoid costly repairs, and protect the environment. If you notice any signs of septic system problems, such as slow drains, foul odors, or wet spots in your yard, contact a Clearline immediately
